Lagavulin, established in 1816, became the main Islay malt with its intense flavor and rich smoky aroma. The Islay island that receives strong wind, is situated on the west coast of Scotland and the name Lagavulin comes from the Gaelic meaning "basin with a mill". Distilling began in this cove on Islay, and for 200 years the distillery, hidden behind the ruins of a 13th-century castle, became the home of one of the world's most beloved whiskies. Lagavulin has a short maturation period and is characterized by a tangy taste, with the flavor becoming deeper as it matures.
